The septum piercing has become one of the most requested piercings at Devil Art Studio — versatile enough to wear visibly with a ring or flipped up and hidden for work or formal events.

Where It’s Actually Pierced

Despite how it looks, a septum piercing doesn’t go through cartilage. It passes through the “sweet spot” — a thin strip of soft tissue just in front of the septal cartilage. That’s part of why, when done correctly, it tends to be less painful than most people expect.

Pain Level and Healing

Most clients describe a brief, sharp pressure during the piercing itself, followed by mild tenderness for a few days. Full healing generally takes six to eight months, though the piercing is often comfortable enough to handle daily life within a couple of weeks with proper care.

Septum piercings are typically started with a circular barbell or a retainer ring, which can be flipped up and hidden inside the nose when needed. Once healed, you can switch to septum rings, clickers, or horseshoe styles.

It’s technically two separate piercings through the upper cartilage of the ear, aligned precisely so a single barbell can pass through both. That alignment is the hardest part to get right — even a small placement error can affect healing and comfort, so this is not a piercing to get from an inexperienced studio.

Cartilage piercings are more sensitive than earlobe piercings, so expect a sharper, more noticeable pinch during the procedure itself.
